California fire extinguisher annual maintenance tag
In California, Title 19 of the Code of Regulations requires an annual maintenance tag on every portable fire extinguisher after its annual maintenance (§576.1). The tag is machine printed on stock approved by the State Fire Marshal and shows "Do not Remove by Order of the State Fire Marshal", the company’s name and business location, its "E" license number and type, the Seal of Registration and a local phone number (§596.1). On the day, the technician writes the date, their "EE" certificate of registration number and their signature (§596.5).
What the tag must show
Section 596.1(a) lists the machine-printed items, all on one side of the tag:
- "Do not Remove by Order of the State Fire Marshal" at the top
- The concern name as listed on the license, and its business location
- License number ("E" number) and license type
- A service maintenance / new extinguisher block, and the date of service
- Certificate of Registration: a printed "EE" followed by space for the individual’s number
- The State Fire Marshal’s Seal of Registration
- A line for the signature of the person who did or supervised the work
- A valid local phone number for the company
Written on the day
On the date of service, the person who did or supervised the work writes the date, a legible "EE" number and their signature on the tag. A rubber stamp of a name or initials is not acceptable (§596.5). A tag only goes on when that person actually did or supervised the service (§596.6).
Size, colour and attachment
Annual maintenance tags are 4¾ × 2⅜ inches, with ½ inch of leeway either way, and not red (§596.2). One tag per extinguisher, attached with wire, string or plastic ties, or as a State Fire Marshal approved self-adhesive tag that is not placed on the front of the extinguisher (§596.3). Nothing may be attached over the front of the tag (§596).
Monthly inspections are separate
The owner keeps records of inspected extinguishers until the next required maintenance. At least monthly, the date and the inspector’s initials go on a tag or label on the unit, an inspection checklist on file, or an electronic system (§574.5).
How Stampario fills it

- The extinguisher report lists every unit with location, type, size, serial number, service and next hydro date, so the owner gets the whole inventory in one signed PDF.
- A firm number and a technician number print on every report: in California, enter the company’s "E" license number and your "EE" registration number.
- Stampario never prints tags or the State Fire Marshal seal. Tags come from your own approved tag stock.
Common questions
Can Stampario print my California tags?
No. California tags are machine printed on State Fire Marshal approved stock that carries the Seal of Registration, and the date, "EE" number and signature are written by hand. The report gives you the unit list to work from.
What is the difference between the "E" and "EE" numbers?
The "E" number is the company’s license number. The "EE" number is the individual’s certificate of registration. Both appear on the tag; the "EE" number is written in by the person who did the work.
